Manche and the Pyrénées
with a Donkey
GR 36 from the Manche to the Pyrénées
The GR 36 connects Bourg-Madame, a village on the Spanish border in the Pyrénées-Orientales, to the port of Ouistreham in Calvados. Covering nearly 2,000 km, it crosses France from north to south, offering diverse landscapes and cultural encounters. The trail starts on the Normandy beaches and climbs up to 2,300 meters in the Pyrénées mountains.
France from North to South
This GR 36 first follows the shores of the English Channel (Manche), offering splendid views of the sea and the region’s salt marshes. It then crosses the typical agricultural and bocage landscapes of Lower Normandy, before reaching the Orne department with its forests and rolling hills.
The Eure Valley
Heading eastward, the path enters the Centre-Val de Loire region, crossing farmland and deciduous forests, passing through historic towns like Chartres, famous for its cathedral. The route continues through the Eure valley, then reaches the Indre department where the scenery diversifies with small hills and wild valleys.
The Berry Region
The trail then passes through the agricultural lands and forests of Berry, crossing picturesque villages and typical hamlets. This less-traveled region is full of charm, where hikers can soak in the tranquility of the French countryside.
Next, the GR 36 enters the Creuse department, a more mountainous area where wild nature and winding rivers shape the landscape. The region is dominated by dense forests and wet meadows. The trail passes near remarkable natural sites such as the Sioule gorges and the Limagne hills.
The Massif Central
Continuing south, the GR 36 enters the Massif Central. The landscapes change dramatically with the arrival of volcanoes and more imposing mountains. The trail crosses plateaus, dormant volcanoes, and thick forests. This section is particularly spectacular, with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and notable natural sites like the Monts du Cantal.
The Gateways to the Pyrénées
The hike also follows the Allier gorges and deep valleys before reaching the gateways to the Pyrénées, where the trail becomes more alpine. Beech forests and mountain meadows give way to rocky ridges and breathtaking panoramas. The final stretch is more challenging but incredibly rewarding for experienced hikers.
The Pyrénées
Finally, the trail ends in the Pyrénées, on the Spanish border, offering spectacular mountain views and high-altitude thrills. It passes through typical southern French villages known for their stone architecture and southern culture. It’s the end of an incredible journey through a diverse France, offering hikers a total immersion in nature and regional history.
The GR 36 is a unique route that allows you to discover the many facets of France, from the coasts of the Manche to the peaks of the Pyrénées.
