The Great Crossings of the Vercors
The Grande Traversée du Vercors (GTV) offers an immersion into a wild and preserved territory, where Alpine and Mediterranean influences shape landscapes of incredible diversity.
The Great Crossings of the Vercors
An incredible variety of landscapes
The GTV crosses eight geographically distinct “regions”: the Coulmes, the Four Mountains, the Hauts-Plateaux, the Royans, the Drôme Vercors, the Gervanne, the Diois, and the Trièves. These trails invite hikers and lovers of wide-open spaces to discover these diverse territories. Between valleys, cliffs, plateaus, gorges, and ridges, the Vercors reveals its stunning variety of landscapes and its rich fauna (ibex, chamois, marmots, deer, mouflons, vultures, and more!) and flora—from the edelweiss of Grand Veymont to the wild lavender of the Gervanne.
This route is a classic for Vercors hiking enthusiasts, as it allows crossing the entire massif from north to south. The first section covers the Four Mountains, passing by the alpine pasture of La Molière with its majestic views of Mont Blanc and marmots, near one of the highest spots for speleology. The last section traverses the Hauts-Plateaux Nature Reserve, the largest terrestrial reserve in France, offering a grand adventure along trails combining limestone cliffs, alpine meadows, dense forests, and vast high-altitude plateaus.
Emblematic routes
Among the emblematic routes, the north-south crossing from Corrençon-en-Vercors to Châtillon-en-Diois lets you explore spectacular sites like Grand Veymont (2,341 m), the highest peak of the massif, the Queyrie plain, the Pré Peyret cabin, and the Pas de l’Aiguille, a place steeped in history. The GTV can be done on foot, by mountain bike, or on horseback, depending on your preferences and skill level. For a gentle and contemplative approach, hiking with a donkey is an ideal option, offering a reliable travel companion and helping to lighten your load while experiencing nature up close.
The donkey handlers of FNAR can offer day trips, weekends, or week-long treks on the GTV route and its variants, according to your availability.
